Hyundai Concept Genesis Coupe 2008

Hyundai officially unveiled the highly-anticipated Concept Genesis Coupe at the Loss Angeles Auto Show today. It previews an all-new 2+2 RWD coupe arriving in dealerships in spring of 2009. Notice we did not mention "Tiburon". Hyundai confirmed in their press conference that there will be a separate successor to the Tiburon, and it will be FWD. The production Genesis Coupe will be available in either a 2.0L turbo-4 or a 3.8L V6 that produces well over 300 horsepower. The powerplant is sourced from the upcoming Genesis, which will be available with a 4.6L V8 alongside the V6.

The Concept Genesis Coupe was fitted with 20" wheels, but we expect the production version to be equipped with 19"s by the looks of the very revealing spy shots we posted recently. During the press conference, Hyundai also confirmed the availability of Brembo brakes and Limited Slip Differential on the production version. The production version will also be available with attractive features such a navigation system and push-start button. Due to go on sale in early 2009, the Genesis Coupe is expected to be priced a tad under $20,000 for the turbo-4 and $25,000 for the V6 model. The production-version will make its official debut at the 2008 New York International Auto Show in late March.

Hopefully, these new models from the Korean auto makers will still remain affordable. Anyway, Automotive News reports that Hyundai has confirmed that it is planning a luxury car for the United States set to debut in 2008, which will sit right above the Hyundai Azera. Code-named BH, the rear-wheel drive car will be built in South Korea and will have a V8 engine.

The Huyndai Concept Genesis which is headed for the New York Auto Show (which we will be covering live, so make sure you join us April 4th - April 5th), could be the basis for the 2008 luxury model.

ANGELES, Calif., 11/13/2007 The Northwest Automotive Press Association (NWAPA) named Hyundai Veracruz the “Best Value SUV” of the 2007 14th annual Northwest Sport Utility Vehicle of the Year Competition at the Los Angeles International Auto Show today. The two-day test was held at Portland International Raceway. Twenty-six members of the NWAPA put 28 vehicles through the series of tests October 3-5 in Portland, Oregon. The tests included three main elements: pavement testing, which included a slalom, curve handling, and emergency braking maneuvers; off-road testing, which included hill-climbing and descent abilities, in addition to ride comfort and low-range handling; and testing of the performance, handling and braking of each competing SUV. The overall value for money, packaging and versatility were evaluated through a comprehensive scoring procedure.

The list of SUVs was diverse and ranged in price from under $25,000 to well over $45,000. The Hyundai Veracruz SE with a 3.8-liter V6 engine, equipped with Hyundai’s first 6-speed Shiftronic automatic transmission performed exceeding well, both on-road and off-road. With an “as-tested” MSRP of only $31,120, the Hyundai Veracruz impressed the panel of journalists with its refined and powerful performance and a long-list of standard features including six air bags, which include two-roof mounted side curtain air bags for all rows of seating, Electronic Stability Control (ESC), active head restraints and 18-inch 5-spoke alloy wheels. This combination of performance and value put the Hyundai Veracruz at the top of the list as the Best SUV Overall Value for 2007, beating competitors including the Honda CR-V, Mazda CX-7, Nissan Xterra and the Toyota FJ Cruiser.

HYUNDAI really seem to like their SUVs. Not satisfied with the Santa Fe and the Tucson, they decided to create the Terracan.

In terms of quality and finish, the interior is better than most of its competitors with some nice soft-touch surfaces. However, there is no excusing the poor-looking wood dash inlays which go some way to ruin all the other good work.

When it comes to wild horses, there's a choice of two engines - a 2.7-litre V6 petrol and a 2.2-litre diesel. Of the two I have to say that I was strongly swayed by the diesel unit which combined good economy with a decent turn of pace.

The 2008 Hyundai Accent is an oft-forgotten compact car, yet with a base price of $11,395 for its three-door model, it deserves some attention. Especially since later in 2008, XM Satellite Radio and an auxiliary input jack will be standard fare. While the sub-$12K price does include "America's Best Warranty" (five-year/60,000-mile bumper-to-bumper protection, 10-year/100,000-mile limited powertrain warranty and seven-year/unlimited mileage anti-perforation coverage) and standard side-curtain airbags, it does not include air conditioning. Hyundai Tucson City SX - Economical on fuel and low in price!
In a way we’re seeing cars go through a full circle. Once they were upright and square, then they got lower and sleeker but bigger. With the move to four-wheel drive off-road type vehicles, they got big and (again) square; now with cars like the Tucson City they’re back to being smaller and square – and without the four wheel drive.

In fact, we were honestly hard pushed to find anything much wrong with the Hyundai Tucson City. When we last tested it (see Hyundai Tucson City) it was equipped with an automatic gearbox that caused some problems, but in as-tested manual 5-speed form, the deficiencies of the auto car are largely addressed.
The engine runs on base octane unleaded – and it doesn’t use much of it at all, with an official fuel consumption figure of just 8 litres/100km. Fuel consumption is one of the main advantages of picking the manual over the auto – the auto’s consumption figure is 15 per cent worse at 9.2 litres/100km. Tank size is 58 litres.

The ride quality of the front-wheel drive benefits from the reduced unsprung weight intrinsic in the lack of a rear wheel driveline – unlike most vehicles of this configuration, the ride is good. Suspension front and rear is by independent McPherson struts. The Kumho 215/65 tyres wrapped around 16 inch alloys provide adequate grip and the handling is competent without ever being inspiring. Understeer is dominant trait but the good throttle control that’s available allows the driver to dial-up the desired cornering attitude. A sharp throttle lift can also bring the tail out a little. However, when driven hard, some steering kickback can be felt.

Inside the cabin, Hyundai Tucson City the space is practical and well appointed. The rear load area is accessed by the lift-up rear window or by opening the full tail-gate, the latter rising to a good height. Inside you’ll find a retractable cargo blind, 12V power outlet and tie-down facilities. A full-size spare tyre on an alloy wheel is provided - something of a rarity these days. The 60/40 split backrest folds forward – an action which automatically lowers the bottom cushion to achieve a near-perfectly flat expanded load area. This is one vehicle of this body shape that actually does have good usable rear space. The rear seats’ recline angle can also be adjusted in five steps.

Access to the cabin Hyundai Tucson City is through wide-opening doors and once inside, the door pockets front and rear are large and usefully shaped.

Hyundai grabs lead in 2007 auto quality study

Hyundai Motor Co. leads in five categories in the annual vehicle quality study released Monday by Strategic Vision Inc., a San Diego-based market research company and consultant to automakers.

Hyundai's rise in the rankings is only the latest sign of the improved overall quality and declining number of defects in today's cars and trucks, said David Cole, chairman of the Center for Automotive Research in Ann Arbor, Mich.

``They're coming together to a point where the differences are almost meaningless,'' Cole said.

He said that means buyers will pay increasing attention to dealer service, new technology, fashion features, price and fuel economy.

Once known best as the maker of cheap, entry-level cars with nagging manufacturing flaws, the South Korean automaker outperformed its Japanese, European and U.S. rivals in this year's survey, based on interviews with 27,780 people who bought 2007 models in September-November 2006.

Last year, Hyundai had no winners. And highly regarded Toyota Motor Corp., despite improving its overall quality, went from four leaders last year to one in 2007

A European C-segment 5-door hatchback, codenamed FD, a new nomenclature and a concept Crossover Utility Vehicle (CUV) made of alternative materials that help save fuel and offer enhanced pedestrian safety are the highlights to be presented at Hyundai’s press conference at this year’s Geneva Motor Show.

Hyundai plans to launch the modern understatement FD in summer of 2007. Initially available as a 5-door hatchback and later on as an estate car the FD opens a new chapter for Hyundai in Europe, as it is the first dedicated European C-segment vehicle made by Hyundai.

The Veracruz continues Hyundai’s product expansion and global design evolution through the continued use of fluid and organic forms to create a refined, and luxurious exterior appearance.

“We are very proud of Veracruz and feel this design will not only reinforce our design direction as a company, but also greatly enhance our escalating brand image on a global basis,” said Joel Piaskowski, chief designer at the Hyundai Design Center in Irvine, Calif. “Fluid lines combined with the integrated headlights and taillights envelop Veracruz to create a unified aesthetic.”

Up front, the sculpted bumper creates the appearance of additional height. Three-tiered headlights complement the design. The grille combines a flat-lined upper chrome bezel and a curved lower bezel which houses the Hyundai flying-H logo. Distinctive character lines and a fast profile enhance the stylish yet functional imagery. The vehicle’s seductive beltline ascends from the wraparound headlights and follows the tapering greenhouse to include the prominent taillights. The Tucson is a good choice among compact SUVs. It's not the best of them, but it's comparable to the other vehicles in this class, including those from the big brand names. We hope that answers your first question about the Tucson. To answer your second question, Hyundai quality has been quite good in recent years. In fact, Hyundai is so confident of this that it offers the longest bumper-to-bumper warranty in the business, five years or 60,000 miles. J.D. Power and Associates, which surveys owners on product quality, rated Tucson as the highest-quality all-new model for 2005. That does not mean the Tucson is the best quality vehicle available in dealer showrooms today, but it is an indication that Tucson buyers haven't had many problems with their new vehicles.

The Tucson has clean lines with a relatively big grille up front and headlamps that blend in well with the hood line and edges of the fenders. The front bumper is a large one-piece molding that begins just below the grille, houses three large air openings and two fog lights (on models that have them) and then forms a spoiler at the bottom. Yet in profile this impressive piece of plastic barely protrudes in front of the grille opening. At the back, the outer edges of the rear bumper reaches up to the tail lights; this bumper sticks out a few inches, adding protection.

The 2007 Hyundai Azera is an all-new, full-size sedan and it is a remarkable car. The powertrain is state of the art. The 3.8-liter V6 engine features variable valve timing for low emissions and a broad power curve, while the five-speed automatic gives the driver the option of shifting semi-manually, all very competitive with Lexus, Infiniti and Acura. While there's nothing especially striking in design or styling, take off the Hyundai badge, and it'll pass as family to any one of those Pacific Rim nameplates.

Azera marks a new venture for the South Korea-based carmaker. It's a move upmarket, to compete with the likes of the Toyota Avalon, the Nissan Maxima, the Buick LaCrosse, and the Mercury Milan. Rumors abound that it's the proverbial toe in the water as Hyundai contemplates joining Honda, Nissan and Toyota in creating a stand-alone luxury brand, along the lines of Acura, Infiniti and Lexus. If the Azera is what Hyundai can do with an entry-level luxury car, imagine what it could do with a car costing half again as much.

Hyundai Azera's interior delivers comfortable, near-elegant transport. Materials are top notch, and more than just the upholstery, dash covering and carpet, reaching as well to fabric headliner (instead of what's dismissively known in the industry as mouse fur) and fully flocked glovebox and other storage cubbies. Tolerances, those worrisome gaps between the bits and pieces of plastic and other materials comprising the interior, are impressively tight, earning high marks for fit and finish. All hinged fixtures, from glove box door to roof-mounted grab handles, are damped for smooth, quiet operation.

Design tastes are extremely volatile in the automotive world. A styling cue like an arched-eyebrow headlight treatment can go from eye-catching to invisible in a couple years. Or it can survive for decades and come to be accepted as a brand trademark, such as BMW's twin-kidney grille. The Hyundai Sonata hasn't yet found its signature trademark cues, but the 2007's designers are looking in the right places.

The 2007 Hyundai Sonata's interior marks a major step up the quality ladder. Some rough edges on a few plastic molds and a less-than-lustrous finish on some dash panels are the only shortcomings we noticed. The overall look, though, is clearly competitive with most in the class and better than some.

A polished, hard-surfaced applique capped with a thin slice of chrome divides the upper and lower halves of the dash. The upper is a glare-absorbing dark color, the lower a space-enhancing light tone. The passenger airbag enclosure is seamless, mimicking the trend in higher-end midsize sedans.

Seats are comfortable, with adequate bolstering for the style of driving to which the Sonata aspires. The cloth upholstery on the GL looks and feels durable; on the GLS, it's a bit fancier in texture and stitching. The leather surfaces in the LX add a touch of class without pretending to be luxurious. The height adjustment on the driver's seat, both manual and power, pivots on the seat's front mounts, which effectively moves the seat forward as it rises. This compels taller drivers to choose between rearward seat travel and forward sightline, not always a happy compromise. On the upside, this adds inches to rear-seat legroom behind the driver, one of the multitude of measures in which the '06 Sonata bests the competition. Among the primary competitors, the new Sonata only comes in second to the Honda Accord in front and rear headroom and to the Toyota Camry in rear-seat headroom, but by a mere one- to three-tenths of an inch. And of the second-tier competitors, the Kia Optima alone betters the new Sonata and then only by three-tenths of an inch in front seat hip room.

The 2007 Hyundai Sonata comes in one body style, a four-door, five-passenger sedan. Two engines and three transmissions are available. The base engine is a 162-horsepower four-cylinder. The uplevel engine is a 235-horsepower V6. The four-cylinder can have either a five-speed manual transmission or a four-speed Shiftronic automatic. The V6 comes only with a new-for-2006 five-speed Shiftronic automatic.

The Hyundai Accent has been completely redesigned from the ground up. The Accent four-door sedan was launched as an all-new 2006 model, while the three-door hatchback was introduced in the spring as a 2007 model.

Built on a more substantial platform and powered by a clean and sophisticated new 1.6-liter double overhead-cam engine, the new Accent models are larger and designed to offer more style, sophistication and content than before.

The all-new Hyundai Accent has a much more elegant look to it than the previous-generation model. It starts at the front with integrated 5-mph bumpers and large aerodynamic headlight enclosures that wrap around the front fenders. It has a high roofline with rubber trim running along each side and a windshield that blends into the front of the roof without any visible trim.

The back of the sedan roof sweeps toward the trailing edge of the trunk lid, giving it almost a coupe like appearance. Unlike many modern cars, it has a generous greenhouse with big windows and blacked out trim. This, coupled with a long wheelbase with relatively short overhangs, makes the sedan appear a tad bigger than it is in reality, which is not a bad thing.

Hyundai's 1.6-liter four-cylinder is a modern, sophisticated engine with dual overhead camshafts and continuously variable valve timing. The DOHC and CVVT combination helps give the engine a very broad power band with high fuel efficiency and low emissions. City/Highway fuel economy is an EPA-estimated 32/35 mpg with the manual, 28/36 mpg with the automatic. The engine produces 110 horsepower at 6000 rpm and 106 pound-feet of torque at 4500 rpm.

Completely redesigned, the new 2007 Hyundai Santa Fe is attractive. It blends into the suburbs nicely, shedding the quirky looks of last year's model. It's larger than before and now offers third-row seating, for up to seven passengers. The five-passenger arrangement offers much more cargo space, however. The new Santa Fe is smooth and quiet and handles well on winding, paved roads. Yet it retains Hyundai's value quotient.

Hyundai says the new Santa Fe evokes the assertive grace of a speed skater with a relatively long wheelbase and short overhangs. Certainly if you squint your eyes and look at the side it has more of a profile of a sporty station wagon than that of a traditional body-on-frame SUV. Some would say it looks like a smaller version of the Volkswagen Touareg, which is not a bad comparison.

The 2007 Hyundai Santa Fe comes in three trim levels: GLS, SE, and Limited. All-wheel-drive is offered as an option ($2,000) on all models. The seven-passenger Touring Package ($1,200) includes a folding third-row seat with auxiliary climate control.

The GLS ($20,945) is powered by a 185-hp 2.7-liter V6 engine. it comes standard with cloth upholstery, a five-speed manual gearbox. A four-speed automatic transmission with Shiftronic manual control is optional ($1,200). The GLS is well equipped with air conditioning, a tilt and telescoping steering wheel, 112-watt AM/FM/CD/MP3 audio system with six speakers, rocker panel moldings, heated power side mirrors, power windows, power door locks, remote keyless entry, 16-inch alloy wheels, and a roof rack with rails.
